Post_and_rail_fence_tauranga.JPGWhat to think about when it comes to a post and rail fence

  • Number of Rails - There are normally 3-4 rails on a post and rail fence.
  • Type of stock on the farm - A three rail fence may keep in the cattle but small lambs can breach the gaps so you may need to look at running wires above and below the bottom rail.
  • Is it a straight line or are there bends in the fence line - This can help determine what type of posts you use and how those posts need to be supported in the ground. Its easier to curve timber around full rounds than the flat section of a half round.
  • The size of the rails - Rails timber comes in various widths but the two most common are 150x50 and 150x40 Rails - Again depending on type of stock, (e.g. cattle rails are bigger to match the size of the animal) or the contour of the ground (e.g. 40mm rails can be more flexible to bend)
  • Do you need to add outriggers or a hot wire - to protect the fence especially if you have horses that are prone to "Windsucking"
